Sectional Pro Form provides 200m increment sectional time data
for inidividual horses. Our detailed sectional time coverage for
most metropolitan and provincial racing includes historical data
from the 1stof October, 2012 onwards.
Punting Form's sectional times product is the most extensive
available for Australian horse racing.
Features:
Meeting
Results View:
This view is accessed by selecting a past meeting from the main
results menu. Sectional data is shown for the winner of each race
along with benchmark data for the race leader for comparison
purposes.
There are three user controls (drop-down menus) embedded in the
table:
- All Bmark Var L /Leader; Cls Bmark Var L / Leader.
The default view where several races are shown in the one table
is the 'All Benchmark Variation Lengths' for the winner over the
corresponding figure for the race leader. As noted, this is the
view where figures shown are comparable across races of similar
distance, regardless of class. The three race segments represented
by benchmarks include; to the 600m marker, the last 600m and the
overall race.
To see how a winner performed, or how a race was run relative to
the race class (as opposed to the more general All Benchmark), the
'Class Benchmark Variation Lengths' for the winner over the
corresponding figure for the race leader can be selected from the
drop-down menu.
2. Sectional Time (sec); Sectional Time Rank; Margin From
Leader; PositionIn Running.
Covers the race segment from various position markers to the
finish line. The 'Margin From Leader' and 'Position In Running'
options provide valuable information regarding how the race has
unfolded for all race winners. Lengths gained or lost between
distance markers and the running of comfortable splits whilst
maintaining a position in running, can be key pointers in
explaining race outcomes and how horses have rationed their energy
expenditure.
3. 200m Split Rank; 200m Split Time (sec).
The colour coded 'Split Rank' map provides a quick visual
reference of the 'relative' energy expenditure for each race
winner. The ability to view how it has run each 200m segment
compared to all other runners in the race, continues the theme of
wanting to understand energy distribution. There is an option to
view time instead of rank (colour coding is maintained).

Race
Results View:
This view is accessed by selecting a race from the meeting
results view or by clicking on a race hyperlink in the past form of
a runner in the digital formguide. Sectional data is shown for all
runners and the race leader at each position marker, along with
benchmarking data. The default view where all runners for a race
are shown in the one table is the 'Class Benchmark Variation
Lengths'. This is an important concept, because a race which may
appear to have been run at a fast pace when measured against the
general 'All Benchmark' figure, may appear differently when
compared against the 'Class Benchmark'.

Horse Form
View:
This view is accessed by selecting a hyperlinked horse name from
anywhere within our digital form. Sectional data is shown for each
past start (where available), along with benchmarking data. The
default benchmark setting (via the drop-down menu) is the 'All
Benchmark Variation Lengths' for the winner over the corresponding
figure for the race leader. As previously noted, this is the view
where figures shown are comparable across races of similar
distance, regardless of class.

Frequently
Asked Questions:
How are your sectional times compiled?
We digitally time from race video. Software is used which
enables frame by frame analysis, with each frame representing 0.04
secs (25 fps).
How long after the meeting date will the sectional time data
appear in the form?
RACE DAY PREFERRED ISSUE LATEST ISSUE
Saturday Wednesday a.m. Friday a.m.
Sunday Thursday a.m. Saturday a.m.
Monday Friday a.m. Sunday a.m.
Tuesday Friday a.m. Monday a.m.
Wednesday Monday a.m. Tuesday a.m.
Thursday Tuesday a.m. Wednesday a.m.
Friday Wednesday a.m. Thursday a.m.
In general this means sectional time form data should always be
available for any horse on a 7 day backup.
How accurate are your sectional times?
The key factors which have an influence on the accuracy of our
sectional times include:
- A video frame represents 0.04 seconds. This logically means the
best we can achieve is an accuracy of plus or minus 0.04
seconds.
- Accurate measuring and placement of 200m distance rail markers
by race club staff.
- Camera angles which produce a more side-on view as runners pass
distance markers, enable a more accurate judgment on the part of
our video analysis staff.
- Our timing process requires human interaction with technology.
As such, there will always be scope for human error. We have well
trained and dedicated staff, supported by software written
specifically for the task of compiling sectional times. This
software has in-built error checking, designed to prompt staff when
a time element falls outside of specified guidelines.
The main outcome we are looking for when compiling sectional
times is consistency. A consistent approach produces sectional and
200m split time rankings which enable comparison of the energy
distribution of runners, within and across the races of a
particular meeting (regardless of any incorrect rail marker
positions, difficult camera angles etc).
Why should I have to
pay for sectional times?
Our Sectional Pro Form offering includes much more than just raw
sectional times. Tight integration within a digital formguide and
the way the data is presented / analysed makes a big difference to
the form study process and outcome. Regardless of this aspect,
there is no other 'free' sectional time coverage which matches the
breadth of meetings we cover. It takes an average of 12 man hours
to compile the 200m increment sectional times for one meeting.
Given that we cover approximately 95 meetings per month, it
requires 1,140 man hours to provide the content for a monthly
subscription. Please consider this when deciding whether what we
offer is 'value-for-money'.
Can I obtain just the
raw sectional time data?
The web based Sectional Pro Form product is packaged for
personal-use only. Scraping, storage and further distribution of
our web based data (which has a significant cost of compilation) is
neither permitted, nor in the spirit of fair play. To encourage
'fair play', we do offer data packages (requiring an additional
payment) enabling the user friendly export of raw data to other
personal-use aplications.
Which tracks have 200m
increment sectional time coverage?
We cover all TAB thoroughbred race meetings (excluding jumps
races) conducted at the following locations: Note: We will cover
all runners for as many 200m marker locations as possible. At a
minimum, the 600m, 400m, 200m and finish positions will be analysed
(Pinjarra 1000m straight races are unable to be covered due to the
video camera angle).
